Baby Addison’s Birth Story

May 30, 2019

As 40 weeks approached, my anticipation grew. I kept active as everyone recommended. I cleaned the house every day, I cooked as often as I had the energy to. I did not want to go over the 40 weeks and have to schedule the scariest invasive surgery they call a cesarean.

On one particular day, Monday the 20th of May being the day, I had an itch to get off the computer and clean the floors. I got on my hands and knees and scrubbed any spot I could find on the kitchen, dining, and living room floors. I could not assume I was “nesting” because I had many days like this in the previous months, I am a clean freak after all.

However, later that night I had some irregular contractions (which was very exciting). I resumed my nightly routine of putting all the kids to sleep (I already had three kids – one 4yr old girl, one 3yr old boy, and one 17-month-old boy). Later as I laid down, I noticed something very new and very strange to me. My bed was very wet…My water had indeed broke!

I quickly stuffed what I had put aside for the hospital in a duffle bag, shook my husband awake to let him know what had happened and that I was going to the hospital as a precaution, and then drove myself to the hospital.

Everything checked out as I had presumed; my water had broken and the baby was coming. Now the waiting had begun again.

In the later portion of the night (around 2am) I was administered the epidural (Thank God!) and then was finally able to get some sleep. In and out the nurses would come to check on the progress and increase the Pitocin in order to help the contractions become more frequent and regular. At 5am I was at 5 to 6 cm dilated and then at 7am I was at 8cm dilated. Where was my husband?

Finally, my husband arrived around 9am and by this time I was 8 to 9cm dilated. We were excited, I was mostly relieved he had arrived in time. With 3 kids at home, we had to wait for his dad to finally wake up and head over to watch the kids we still had at home. At 10am we were ready to go. Now, where was the doctor?

At 10:15am the doctor finally showed up, I was already 10cm dilated and very much so ready to push. Guess what? At 10:31am, baby Addison Jane Irvin was born.
